In the meantime, here are some practical tips to stay cool while you wait for our technician:

  • Turn on your ceiling fans and set them to rotate counterclockwise
  • Close your window blinds and curtains
  • Keep your home’s external doors closed as much as possible
  • Ventilate your home at night by opening windows
  • Avoid using appliances that generate heat
  • Consider making a temporary AC

Turn on your ceiling fans and set them to rotate counterclockwise

Ceiling fans typically spin clockwise by default, adding a cooling effect by pushing air down. But if your AC is on the fritz, switching your fan’s rotation to counterclockwise can really help. This distributes some cool air around the room, making things more comfortable. To change the fan blade rotation, just find the switch near the fan’s mounting fixture.

Close your window blinds and curtains

While sunlight can be quite welcoming, it’s a good idea to close your blinds and curtains when your AC is on the fritz. This helps keep your home cooler. Also, resist the urge to create cross-ventilation during the day by opening windows—it won’t keep the warm air out effectively. Stay cool!

Keep your home’s external doors closed as much as possible

You might also want to minimize opening external doors like the front, back, basement, and garage doors. This helps keep the air warm out of your home and ensures things stay more comfortable.

Ventilate your home at night by opening windows

As the outdoor temperature naturally drops at night, opening windows can let in some cooler air, making your home more comfortable. Just don’t forget to close the windows in the morning!

Avoid using appliances that generate heat

To keep your home cool, try to avoid using large appliances like the oven, stove, dryer, and dishwasher. These can generate a lot of heat and make your indoor temperature rise.

Consider making a temporary AC

Desperate times call for innovative solutions! Did you know that you can make your own cooling device with just some ice and an electric fan? You can achieve this by simply filling a large bowl or container with ice and placing it in front of a switched-on electric fan. The fan will blow warm air onto the ice, cooling the air in the room and giving you some much-needed relief. Give it a try!

These tips should help you stay cool while your AC is getting fixed! Remember, Springfield Heating & Cooling is always here to help with your HVAC needs. We’re dedicated to providing effective and prompt service. Feel free to call us for our five-star customer service!
